Donald Trump has called China's new AI model, DeepSeek, a "wake-up call" for the U.S. tech sector following a significant drop in Nvidia's market valuation. The emergence of DeepSeek triggered a sharp decline in the stock prices of AI-focused companies. Nvidia, a major player in the GPU market crucial for AI, suffered the most substantial loss, with a 16.86% share drop—a record on Wall Street. Microsoft, Meta, Alphabet, and Dell Technologies also experienced declines ranging from 2.1% to 8.7%.

Leveraging the open-source DeepSeek-V3, it reportedly demands less computing power and had an estimated training cost of just $6 million. Although this claim has faced scrutiny, it has raised questions about the massive investments American tech firms are making in AI, unsettling investors. DeepSeek's popularity surged, reaching the top of the U.S. free app download charts, fueled by discussions about its performance.
Sheldon Fernandez, co-founder of DarwinAI, commented to CBC News, stating that DeepSeek's performance rivals leading Silicon Valley models, and in some instances, surpasses them according to DeepSeek's claims. He highlighted the significantly lower resource consumption as a game-changer. The accessibility of DeepSeek's features—potentially free versus subscription models of Western competitors—disrupts established business models and valuations.
Trump, however, offered a more optimistic perspective, suggesting DeepSeek could be beneficial to the U.S. by potentially reducing AI development costs while achieving comparable results. He emphasized the potential for cost savings and reiterated his belief in continued U.S. AI dominance.
Despite the impact of DeepSeek, Nvidia remains a multi-trillion dollar company. The company is preparing to launch its highly anticipated RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 GPUs, generating significant consumer demand, with reports of people lining up in cold weather to secure purchases.
