Guard Crush Games, the studio behind Streets of Rage 4, is teaming up once again with publisher Dotemu for a new beat-'em-up. This time, it's Dotemu's first original IP: Absolum. Boasting stunning hand-drawn animation by Supamonks and a killer soundtrack composed by Gareth Coker, Absolum packs a serious punch. My hands-on experience confirmed its immense potential.
Absolum is a roguelite side-scrolling beat-'em-up action-RPG built for deep replayability. It delivers on that promise with branching paths, diverse quests, multiple playable characters, and challenging bosses. I played as Karl, a tanky dwarf-like character, and Galandra, a nimble ranger-type wielding a sword. The gameplay involves battling fantastical creatures, smashing environments in search of health pickups (carrots are a favorite!), exploring buildings for treasure, and facing off against epic bosses. Death is inevitable, but each run offers a fresh challenge and the chance to discover new paths. Two-player same-screen co-op is also planned.
The game evokes a nostalgic feeling reminiscent of classic arcade beat-'em-ups and titles like *Golden Axe*. The simple yet effective two-button combat system allows for strategic attacks. The roguelite elements add a modern twist, enhancing replayability and providing a unique edge. AnswerSee ResultsPlayers will discover a variety of power-ups, both active and passive. Active items, like weapons or spells, are activated using triggers and face buttons. Passive items offer buffs but may come with risks. The risk-reward system adds another layer of strategic depth. For example, I found two orbs that boosted damage but significantly reduced my health. Fortunately, unwanted items can be dropped at any time.10 Images
Upon death (which is part of the roguelite experience!), players return to a shop where they can spend in-game currency to purchase upgrades for their next run. In the preview build, this shop wasn't fully functional.
My first major boss encounter was quite challenging. While I lack footage of that fight, I can show you a later, even more formidable boss. The experience highlighted the potential benefits of the two-player co-op mode.
Absolum's art style, animation, classic beat-'em-up gameplay, and roguelite loop, combined with the developers' proven track record, create a game with immense potential. It's a promising title for those seeking couch co-op experiences. I'm eagerly anticipating future builds.
