Summary

  • The new 2024 D&D Monster Manual features over 500 monsters, including high-level creatures and variants.
  • The book streamlines stat blocks with habitat, treasure, and gear information for easier use.
  • Helpful sections offer guidance on understanding and running monsters for all skill levels.

Dungeons and Dragons has officially previewed the contents of the 2024 Monster Manual, the last core rulebook of the Dungeons and Dragons 2024 revamp. Set to release on February 18, the book is available early to D&D Beyond subscribers starting February 4.

As part of the 5th Edition's 10th-anniversary celebration, Dungeons and Dragons has been revamping its core rulebooks. The journey began with the new Player’s Handbook on September 17, followed by the Dungeon Master’s Guide on November 12. Now, the much-anticipated Monster Manual completes the trio.

The 2024 Monster Manual teases over 500 streamlined stat blocks, featuring 85 brand-new creatures, 40 humanoid NPCs, and variations of familiar monsters such as the primeval owlbear, the vampire umbral lord, and their nightbringer minions. High-level monsters like the CR 21 arch-hag and the CR 22 elemental cataclysm have been enhanced with streamlined attacks and revamped Legendary Actions, making them formidable foes.

Dungeons and Dragons 2024 Monster Manual Contents

  • Over 500 new monsters, including:
    • 85 new creatures
    • 40 humanoid NPCs
    • High-level monsters like the elemental cataclysm or arch-hag
    • Variant monsters like the primeval owlbear, vampire nightbringer, and vampire umbral lord
  • Rebalanced, easier-to-use stat blocks featuring habitat, treasure, and gear
  • Tables that sort monsters by habitat, creature type, and CR
  • Guides for understanding and using monster stat blocks
  • Hundreds of new pieces of artwork

The Monster Manual goes beyond mere stat blocks, providing tools to enhance gameplay. Each monster entry now includes details on their habitats and potential treasures, as well as the gear they use, which players can loot and use. The book also includes comprehensive lists of monsters sorted by habitat, creature type, and Challenge Rating, consolidating all necessary information into one convenient volume.

New sections titled "How to Use a Monster" and "Running a Monster" at the beginning of the book offer detailed explanations of stat blocks and practical advice on how monsters behave in combat. These sections are designed to assist Dungeon Masters of all skill levels in effectively utilizing the creatures within the 2024 Monster Manual.

Notably, the book does not include detailed instructions on creating custom creatures, a feature present in the 2014 Dungeon Master’s Guide. However, fans eager for this information won't have to wait long. While the Monster Manual officially releases on February 18, Hero and Master Tier D&D Beyond subscribers can access it digitally on February 11 and 4, respectively, revealing the full contents of the book in less than a month.
