Vincent D'Onofrio: Wilson Fisk's Movie Rights Complicate Daredevil: Born Again

Fans of the Marvel universe and the iconic villain Wilson Fisk, portrayed by Vincent D’Onofrio, might be disappointed to learn that Fisk is unlikely to appear on the big screen anytime soon. In a recent interview on the podcast Happy Sad Confused with Josh Horowitz, D’Onofrio revealed, "The only thing I know is not positive. It's a very hard thing to do, for Marvel to use my character. It's a very hard thing to do, because of ownership and stuff." He further clarified that his portrayal of Fisk is limited to television, dashing hopes of a standalone Wilson Fisk movie or appearances in major Marvel Cinematic Universe films like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday.

This news could also impact potential plans for a Charlie Cox-led Daredevil movie, where fans would expect to see D’Onofrio reprise his role as the formidable antagonist. D’Onofrio's comments suggest that the complexities of character rights and ownership are significant hurdles that may prevent Fisk from appearing in cinematic ventures.

D’Onofrio first brought Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, to life in the 2015 Netflix series Marvel's Daredevil. Over three seasons and nearly 40 episodes, his performance was lauded by both fans and critics. D’Onofrio's deep understanding of the character is evident in his approach to Fisk's portrayal, drawing inspiration from legendary actors like Harrison Ford. In an interview with IGN last month, he shared, "Anytime they were in a fight, or they were holding a gun, they looked nervous. They carried their own humility into the action scenes with them. And I always thought that that was the way to go. That made it look real to me. Gary Cooper in Sergeant York, when he takes aim, when he becomes the sniper, it's the humility in his eyes that you see. It's amazing. I think that helps action stuff a lot. We're all very conscious of that."

Currently, fans can enjoy D’Onofrio’s compelling performance in Season 1 of Daredevil: Born Again, which is airing week-to-week on Disney+ and is set to conclude with its finale on April 15, 2025.
