Master Chief, the iconic face (albeit helmet-clad) of the Halo franchise, is a hugely popular skin in Fortnite. His return to the item shop after a two-year absence was met with cheers, but a small detail quickly soured the celebration.
The original release of the Master Chief skin included a special Matte Black style, exclusively awarded to players on Xbox Series S|X consoles. For a considerable period, Epic Games advertised this style as perpetually obtainable. The abrupt announcement of its discontinuation, therefore, caused significant backlash.
Some fans even believed this action violated legal agreements and began organizing a potential class-action lawsuit. However, Epic Games swiftly reversed course within 24 hours. The Matte Black style will now be available to all Master Chief skin owners who play a single game on an Xbox Series S|X console.
This reversal appears to be the most sensible outcome. Given the holiday season and Christmas celebrations, a controversial move like this would have undoubtedly dampened the festive spirit for many players.
