A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch! Unlike other consoles, the Switch boasts a smaller, but still impressive, selection of Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles. This list focuses on those available on the Switch eShop, excluding Nintendo Switch Online offerings. We've curated ten fantastic games – four Game Boy Advance and six Nintendo DS – presented without any specific ranking. Let's dive in!
Kicking things off is the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge in my opinion, this GBA iteration is still a solid experience. A worthwhile comparison piece, offering a potentially more streamlined playthrough. Steel Empire is enjoyable regardless of the platform, even for those who typically avoid shooters.
As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA. This side-scrolling action game, the first in an excellent series, might initially feel slightly rough around the edges. However, these imperfections are smoothed out in later installments, making this the perfect entry point.
A Mega Man double feature! Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network offer distinctly different gameplay experiences. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later entries in this series show diminishing returns, the original remains highly entertaining.
Another collection worth exploring entirely, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For me, it's even preferable to the acclaimed Symphony of the Night on the right day. The soul-collecting system encourages grinding, but the engaging gameplay makes it worthwhile. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal, making it a top-tier GBA title.
The original Shantae achieved cult status, but limited distribution hindered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge on DSiWare broadened its appeal, launching Shantae into continued success across generations. This game occupies a unique space, essentially rising from the ashes of an unreleased GBA title. Interestingly, that original game is slated for release soon and may warrant inclusion on a future list.
Technically a GBA game (its origin), this title deserves mention. Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling. The first game sets a high bar, though later entries are also compelling.
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick boasts equally strong writing and unique gameplay. As a ghost, you manipulate objects to save people and uncover the truth behind your death. A captivating and highly recommended experience.
Considered one of the best Nintendo DS games, The World Ends With You shines on its original hardware. While ports haven't perfectly replicated the experience, the Switch version provides a satisfying alternative for those without a DS. A truly exceptional game.
The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all three Nintendo DS Castlevania games. Dawn of Sorrow stands out due to improved button controls replacing the original's touch controls. However, all three games in the collection are highly recommended.
A franchise that thrives on the DS/3DS ecosystem, Atlus has successfully adapted Etrian Odyssey III. Each game in the series is a substantial RPG. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a rewarding, albeit occasionally challenging, experience.
This concludes our list. Share your favorite Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS games on the Switch in the comments below! Thanks for reading!
