In the not-so-distant past, less than a decade ago, adult LEGO enthusiasts, known as AFOLs (Adult Fans of LEGO), were a niche community. LEGO catered to them with occasional Creator Expert sets, such as modular buildings, but these were more the exception than the rule.
Over the last ten years, LEGO has transformed its brand remarkably. No longer are "automatic binding bricks" just toys for children; they've become a mainstream hobby and pastime for teens and adults as well. LEGO continues to offer original modular buildings, but the company has expanded its range to include detailed replicas of movie props, functional amusement park rides, luxury car models, and more. These sets are designed not for play but as display pieces, crafted to be admired from afar.
While this expansion into diverse LEGO products is exciting, it does come with a higher price tag due to increased piece counts and licensing fees for sets themed around popular franchises like Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, Nintendo, and Minecraft. Although these sets can be costly, LEGO fans are not likely to stop buying them entirely. Instead, they may become more selective, spending their money more carefully on the sets they truly desire.
LEGO maintains premium pricing and retires sets rather than allowing their value to depreciate on the shelf. However, there are specific times throughout the year when savvy buyers can maximize their spending and enhance their enjoyment of LEGO.
Double Insider Points
In August 2023, the LEGO VIP program was rebranded as LEGO Insiders, a free loyalty rewards program accessible on LEGO's official site. Joining offers various benefits, including early access to exclusive sets available only on LEGO.com. The primary attraction for members, though, is earning Insider points on purchases made through the official LEGO website or in-store. In the U.S., you earn 6.5 points per dollar spent, which can be redeemed at a rate of $1 for every 130 points.
For example, spending $300 on a high-end set would earn you $15 towards future purchases, representing a 5% return. However, during promotional periods, you can earn double Insider points on selected sets, turning that $300 into $30 in rewards. These promotions are often announced in advance, so staying updated via LEGO's social media is key.
Sales Seasons
Black Friday and Cyber Monday
LEGO participates in the year's biggest shopping event, running from the Friday before through Cyber Monday. During this time, certain premium sets like the Batcave Shadow Box and the Pac-Man arcade earn triple Insider points, while others like the Hogwarts Chamber of Secrets and BMW M 1000 RR earn quadruple points. While details for Black Friday 2025 are yet to be announced, you can stay informed with our guide to the best LEGO deals or visit LEGO's Black Friday page.
Amazon Prime Day
Amazon Prime Day, typically held in mid-July, is another prime time for LEGO deals. Prime members can benefit from discounts on LEGO sets, including popular picks from Marvel and Star Wars. Additionally, Amazon hosts an October Prime Day sale, which often features attractive LEGO deals.
Holiday Weekends
Beyond major shopping events, three-day weekends around federal holidays like Presidents' Day, Labor Day, and Memorial Day often present good opportunities for LEGO discounts at third-party vendors and sometimes at the LEGO store itself.
Third-Party Outlets
LEGO sets are available at various third-party outlets, including Amazon, Target, Walmart, Barnes & Noble, and Best Buy. These retailers often offer their own deals during events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday. However, note that only Target offers redeemable Insider points for LEGO purchases, at a lower exchange rate of 1:1 compared to 1:6.5 at the official LEGO Store.
Gifts With Purchase
LEGO also offers 'Gifts With Purchase' (GWPs), where spending a certain amount grants you a complimentary set. For instance, spend $170 during Insiders Weekend to receive a Winter Market Stall, or $250 for Majisto’s Magical Workshop. In-store, spending $40 on Insiders Weekend earns you a Holiday Winter Train. New GWPs are introduced monthly, sometimes even biweekly, so it's wise to check current offers before making a purchase.
May The 4th Be With You!
Star Wars Day on May 4th is another excellent opportunity for LEGO deals. It's often when LEGO releases its Collector Series replicas for the year. Last year, buying select sets on this day earned 5x the Insider points.
The key to enjoying LEGO as an adult hobby without breaking the bank is vigilance. There are many expensive sets, but by timing your purchases right, you can take advantage of LEGO deals and indulge in your passion more affordably.
