The Future of GTA Online After GTA 6's Release: What We Know
The impending release of Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) in Fall 2025 has left many GTA Online players wondering about the fate of their long-standing investment in the game. With GTA 6 expected to introduce a new and potentially improved GTA Online experience (possibly even GTA Online 2), concerns are rising about the future of the current iteration. Will players' progress, time, and money be rendered obsolete?
Rockstar's continued support for GTA Online, despite the release of GTA 5's story DLC, highlights its profitability. This longevity, however, raises questions about the transition to the next generation of GTA Online.
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed these concerns in a recent interview. While he avoided specifics regarding future GTA Online plans, he cited the example of NBA 2K Online and NBA 2K Online 2. Both versions coexisted successfully in the Asian market, demonstrating a willingness to support legacy titles when a substantial player base remains engaged.
Zelnick's statement, "we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles," suggests that the current GTA Online might not be abandoned with the arrival of its successor. Continued player engagement, therefore, could ensure ongoing support for the original GTA Online.
However, much remains unknown about GTA 6. With only a trailer and a release window confirmed, Rockstar needs to provide further clarity soon, especially given the proximity of Borderlands 4's September release. Until then, the question of GTA Online's future remains open, though Zelnick's comments offer a degree of reassurance.
