Climate Crisis Game Atuel Hits Android

Argentine indie studio Matajuegos has released its surreal documentary game Atuel on Android and PC via Steam. First launched on itch.io in September 2022, Atuel gained recognition for its immersive storytelling, experimental mechanics, and captivating visuals.

The title has earned prestigious awards, including IndieCade 2022's Innovation in Experience Design honor. It's also been showcased globally at events like Cannes' Marché du Film and Washington D.C.'s Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Atuel's Gameplay Experience

Atuel examines the profound connection between communities and Argentina's western Cuyo desert region. It blends real-world narratives with fluid, dream-inspired gameplay.

Players traverse expansive surreal landscapes mirroring the Atuel River Valley's actual geography. You'll transform between animals, ecological elements, and even the river itself.

The journey features insights from historians, scientists, and locals discussing the region's ecological story and humanity's relationship with land and water amidst climate challenges. Watch the gameplay trailer below.

Interestingly, the Atuel River begins at glacial Atuel Lake in the Andes. As Mendoza's longest river, it sculpted the dramatic Atuel Canyon - the primary inspiration for the game's environments.

Now Available

Developed with The 12.01 Project filmmakers, Atuel prioritizes dreamlike immersion over traditional documentary formats according to lead creator Santiago Franzani.

Rather than realism, the game crafts poetic spaces where narratives unfold through movement, transformation, and soundscapes. Players experience humanity's delicate environmental connections through innovative storytelling.

The free-to-play game supports full controller functionality. Download Atuel today on Google Play.
