Stardew Valley: A Comprehensive Guide to Maximizing Friendship
Forging strong relationships is crucial in Stardew Valley. Integrating into Pelican Town involves acts of kindness and generosity towards your neighbors, whether you're aiming for friendship or romance. While conversations and gifts are key, not all interactions are equal. This guide details how to maximize your relationships with the villagers.
Updated January 4, 2025, by Demaris Oxman: The 1.6 update has brought many players back to Stardew Valley, and this guide reflects the current mechanics. While the friendship system remains largely unchanged, some 1.6 additions are noted below.
The Heart System

Access the heart menu (in-game menu, heart tab) to view your relationship level with each NPC. Higher heart levels unlock special events, mail rewards, and dialogue options. However, the heart meter only reflects the accumulated friendship points.
Understanding Friendship Points
Each heart represents 250 friendship points. Positive interactions (talking, gifting) earn points, while negative actions (ignoring, giving disliked gifts) decrease them.
Boosting Friendship Gains
The "Friendship 101" book provides a permanent 10% boost to friendship point gains. It costs 20,000g and can be obtained from the Prize Machine (9th prize) or occasionally from the Bookseller (Year 3, 9% chance). This book only affects point gains, not losses.
Point Values for Interactions
Numerous actions impact friendship points.
Daily Interactions

- Talking: +20 points (or +10 if the character is busy). Ignoring a character results in a -2 point penalty per day (-10 with a bouquet given, -20 for a spouse).
- Bulletin Board Deliveries: +150 points with the recipient.
Gifting

Gift preferences vary, but point values are consistent:
- Loved: +80 points
- Liked: +45 points
- Neutral: +20 points
- Disliked: -20 points
- Hated: -40 points
Birthday and Feast of the Winter Star gifts multiply point values (x8 and x5 respectively).
Stardrop Tea

This universally loved gift grants +250 points (+750 on birthdays/Winter Star). It can be obtained from the Prize Machine, Golden Fishing Chests, the Helper's Bundle, or from the raccoon.
Movie Theater

Inviting an NPC to the movies (using a Movie Ticket) yields varying points based on movie and concession choices.
Conversations and Dialogue

Dialogue choices can yield +10 to +50 points or cause friendship loss. Heart Events offer similar opportunities for significant friendship boosts or penalties.
Festivals and Events
Flower Dance: Dancing with an NPC (4 hearts or higher) yields +250 points.
Luau: Community soup contributions affect friendship with all villagers.
Community Center: Completing the Bulletin Board bundles grants +500 points with each non-dateable villager.
By understanding these mechanics, you can cultivate thriving relationships in Stardew Valley and unlock all the game has to offer.
