Sony's recent PC gaming policies have sparked considerable outrage among gamers. The company's requirement for PSN tethering, even in single-player titles, coupled with regional service limitations, has restricted the availability of modern releases.
However, Sony has announced some policy adjustments. While the concept of PSN tethering on PC isn't entirely abandoned, several relaxations are forthcoming.
PSN tethering will become optional in the following games:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- God of War Ragnarök
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
Players who choose to maintain PSN tethering will receive the following in-game bonuses:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Early access to the "2099" costume line for Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
- God of War Ragnarök: Access to the Black Bear armor set, the "Lost Things" chest at the game's start, and a resource pack.
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered: Bonus points to unlock features.
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: The Nora Valiant costume.
In a November investor call, COO Hiroki Totoki acknowledged the backlash against PSN connection requirements, emphasizing their importance for security and order. While he framed the restrictions in terms of service-based games, he offered no explanation as to how single-player titles like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 or God of War Ragnarök benefit from mandatory PSN account linking.
Times are changing.
