Cellar Door Games Releases Rogue Legacy Source Code
Game Assets Remain Protected But Developers Offer Collaboration Opportunities
In a recent social media post, Cellar Door Games announced they've published the full source code for their 2013 hit Rogue Legacy. "A decade after Rogue Legacy's debut, we're releasing its source code to help others learn," the developers stated, directing users to a GitHub repository containing the complete game scripting under a non-commercial license. This allows free access for personal study and educational purposes.
The GitHub repository is maintained by developer and Linux porting specialist Ethan Lee, who has previously handled source code releases for other indie titles like Blendo Games' Flotilla. This open-source initiative has been widely praised by the gaming community as an invaluable resource for aspiring game developers.

Beyond education, this release helps preserve the game against potential digital storefront removals. The announcement even caught the attention of Andrew Borman from the Rochester Museum of Play, who proposed collaborative preservation efforts with the developers.
While the repository includes all game text localization, it excludes proprietary assets. "This release is for educational purposes and fan projects," Cellar Door clarified. "For commercial uses involving protected assets, please contact us directly."
