A New Era for Pokemon in Japan
Famitsu reports that Scarlet and Violet have sold an impressive 8.3 million units domestically, ending Red and Green's 28-year reign. Released in 2022, these titles marked a significant shift for the franchise, introducing the first truly open-world experience in the series. Players could explore the Paldea region freely, a departure from the linear gameplay of previous installments.
While the ambitious open-world design brought initial technical challenges, including graphical glitches and frame rate issues, the games' popularity was undeniable. Within their first three days, they achieved over 10 million global sales, with 4.05 million from Japan alone – setting records for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Japan launches.
The original Pokemon Red and Green (known internationally as Red and Blue), launched in 1996, introduced the world to the Kanto region and its 151 Pokemon. While they still hold the record for worldwide sales (31.38 million units as of March 2024), Scarlet and Violet are rapidly closing in on that mark with 24.92 million units sold. Pokemon Sword and Shield follow closely behind with 26.27 million units sold.
