As collectors await the Destined Rivals release in the US on May 30, the Japanese Glory of Team Rocket set is seeing a surge in single card purchases. With the initial excitement fading, prices are dropping rapidly, making now an ideal time to buy.
This isn’t just a typical post-launch dip; increased stock availability and shifting investor interest have made singles far more cost-effective than sealed boxes, despite their allure. Here’s why US collectors should consider singles now.
Japanese booster boxes for the Glory of Team Rocket set are currently valued at over double their original price. Such high markups haven’t been seen since the 151 set, but improving stock levels suggest relief from global Pokémon TCG shortages is near.
For instance, Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex SIR, which hit $500 around April 20, has dropped to $370.77 in recent days—a clear sign of market correction.
Similarly, Team Rocket's Moltres ex SIR has fallen from $250 to $163, an $87 reduction in just a week. These declines indicate scalpers are exiting, reducing artificial price inflation at launch.
Not every card is a high-cost chase card. The Super Rare ex and Hyper Rare ex variants in Glory of Team Rocket boast stunning designs, often overlooked, making them perfect for collectors.
For example, Team Rocket's Mewtwo Super Rare ex has risen slightly by $6 to $38.75 since release. Its vibrant artwork, featuring Pokémon with their trainer’s outline, makes it a must-have.
Conversely, Team Rocket's Nidoking Super Rare ex has stabilized at $12.94 after dropping from $26. A fan favorite for Gen 1 enthusiasts, its menacing design echoes the Pokémon anime’s early days. Cards like Moltres and Crobat are also worth grabbing now for future value growth.
Nostalgia shines with Gen 1 and 2 characters like Giovanni, Team Rocket’s Kanto leader, and Ariana, Johto’s interim boss.
Limited data exists for Giovanni 129/098, but its depiction of Team Rocket’s leadership holds steady at around $17. Snag it if it dips lower. With Giovanni or Mewtwo cards, expect premium prices.
Team Rocket's Ariana 128/098, with its striking artwork, ranges from $17 to $18. Listings under $18 are a steal given the set’s recent release.
The Scarlet and Violet era’s illustration and art rares are among the TCG’s finest, offering stunning visuals at budget-friendly prices—perfect for collectors aiming to build valuable, eye-catching binders.
Team Rocket's Meowth 109/098, now at $19.25, has dropped nearly $20 since the Glory of Team Rocket launch. Its iconic tie to Team Rocket makes anything under $20 a great deal.
Blaziken 101/098 is another steal, with its breathtaking artwork showcasing the Gen 3 starter. Its Infernal Legs attack, dealing 120 damage to an active Pokémon and 120 to a benched one, makes it a strong play. At $9.40, it’s a card to grab now.
While opening Glory of Team Rocket booster packs is tempting despite their cost and five-card count, singles offer better value. Prices noted here are accurate at the time of writing, but stock fluctuates on TCG Player’s live marketplace. Missed the Charizard Sam’s Club deal? Check back for restocks.
