Niantic Inc. has announced the sale of its gaming division, including popular titles like Pokémon Go, Pikmin Bloom, and Monster Hunter Now, along with their development teams, to Scopely, a company owned by the Saudi investment firm Savvy Games, for $3.5 billion. Additionally, Niantic will distribute $350 million in cash to its equity holders, bringing the total value of the transaction to approximately $3.85 billion.

In a press release, Scopely highlighted that Niantic's games boast over 30 million monthly active users (MAUs) and more than 20 million weekly active users, generating over $1 billion in revenue in 2024. Pokémon Go, in particular, remains a powerhouse, consistently ranking among the top 10 mobile games since its launch nearly a decade ago, with over 100 million unique players in 2024.

Niantic emphasized that its game teams are set to continue their work on long-term roadmaps under Scopely's umbrella. "This partnership ensures that our games have the long-term support needed to be 'forever games' that will endure for future generations," Niantic stated in a blog post. Players can expect the same beloved games, apps, services, and events, supported by the same dedicated teams.

In a separate blog post, Pokémon Go's chief, Ed Wu, addressed community concerns about the game's future following the acquisition. Wu, a key figure since the game's inception and massive 2016 launch, expressed optimism about the partnership. "Scopely expressed a deep admiration for this community and our team. I have every belief Pokémon GO will further flourish as part of Scopely, not only into its second decade but for many more years to come, under the mission of discovering Pokémon in the real world and inspiring people to explore together," Wu stated.

Wu also emphasized that the Pokémon Go team would remain intact, continuing to develop the game with the same passion and dedication. He highlighted the ongoing partnership with The Pokémon Company and Scopely's commitment to supporting the game's long-term vision. "Scopely empowers their game teams as autonomous groups to go after the roadmaps that they’re inspired to pursue, and what each team believes is best for the player experience," Wu added, expressing confidence in Scopely's approach to game development.

Wu also pointed out Scopely's focus on game-making as a private company, which aligns with Pokémon Go's long-term mission rather than short-term gains. He stressed the importance of the real-world community, which will continue to guide the game's development. "With Scopely’s full commitment, experience, and resources, we’re going to make Pokémon Go the very best it can be – with incredible battles for thousands of Trainers at a time at our live events and new ways to connect to your friends and community, all while remaining focused on the excitement and experience of discovering Pokémon in the real world," Wu concluded.

In other news, Niantic is spinning off its geospatial AI business into a new entity, Niantic Spatial Inc., which will receive $50 million from Scopely and $200 million from Niantic itself. Niantic Spatial will continue to operate other real-world AR games, such as Ingress Prime and Peridot.
