Sony's Unveiled Los Angeles PlayStation Studio Fuels AAA Speculation
A newly established PlayStation studio in Los Angeles, California, is generating significant buzz within the gaming community. This confirmation comes via a recent job posting, revealing the studio's involvement in developing a high-profile, original AAA title for the PS5. This marks Sony's 20th first-party studio.
The secrecy surrounding the studio's identity has sparked considerable speculation. Two leading theories point towards potential origins: a spin-off team from Bungie, following the July 2024 layoffs that saw 155 Bungie employees transition to Sony Interactive Entertainment, or a team led by Jason Blundell, a prominent Call of Duty developer.
Blundell's connection to PlayStation stems from his co-founding of Deviation Games, a studio shuttered in March 2024 after facing undisclosed challenges. However, a significant number of Deviation Games employees joined PlayStation in May 2024, forming a new team under Blundell's leadership. Given the longer gestation period of Blundell's team, it's considered a more likely candidate for the new Los Angeles studio. The possibility of this team continuing or reviving Deviation Games' cancelled AAA project is a popular fan theory.
While details remain scarce, the announcement of this new studio is exciting news for PlayStation fans, adding another highly anticipated first-party title to the pipeline, even if an official reveal may be years away. The studio's "ground-breaking" original IP promises to be a significant addition to the PlayStation ecosystem.
