Expand Your Stardew Valley Farm Family: A Guide to Multiple Pets
One of Stardew Valley's greatest charms is the diverse range of animals you can keep on your farm. This guide explains how to acquire multiple pets, expanding your furry (or scaly) family beyond the initial choice.
Unlocking Multiple Pets
Initially, Stardew Valley only allowed one pet per save. However, the 1.6 update changed this, enabling players to adopt multiple companions. To unlock this ability, you must first maximize your friendship level with your existing pet.

This involves:
- Daily Watering: Ensure your pet's bowl is full of water every day (except during rain or snow). Use your Watering Can.
- Daily Petting: Interact with your pet daily to see a heart bubble appear above its head.
Monitor your pet's friendship level in the "Animals" tab of the pause menu. Once maxed, Marnie will send a letter informing you of additional pet adoption options. If you skipped the initial pet adoption, Marnie will send this letter at the start of Year 2.
Adopting Multiple Pets

After receiving Marnie's letter, visit her ranch shop (9:00 AM - 4:00 PM, closed Mondays and Tuesdays). Select the "Adopt Pets" option. You'll see a list of 12 pet licenses:

Essential Pet Supplies

Before adopting new pets, visit Robin's shop to commission Pet Bowls (5,000g and 25 Hardwood each). These bowls are crucial; neglecting them will cause your pets to run away.

Marnie's shop also sells optional decorative items like doghouses and cat trees, which don't affect friendship levels.
With these steps, you can build a thriving menagerie on your Stardew Valley farm. Enjoy your expanded animal family!
