In Path of Exile 2, the endgame Atlas map features four main events: Delirium, Breaches, Rituals, and Expeditions. The Expedition system, originally from the Expedition League in the first game, has been revitalized as a key endgame feature in PoE 2. This guide will walk you through how to find and engage with an Expedition, how to use the Detonator and Explosives effectively, and how to access the Expedition Passive Skill Tree. We'll also cover the unique rewards you can earn from this exciting endgame system.
PoE 2 Expedition & Detonation Mechanic, Explained
On the Atlas screen, map nodes with guaranteed endgame events are marked with specific icons. Nodes containing an Expedition are identified by an ethereal light blue icon featuring a spiral-like shape. To ensure an Expedition encounter, place an Expedition Precursor Tablet into a completed Lost Tower slot on the Atlas screen.
Once you load into a map with an Expedition, explore until you find an area marked with Markers and a tent with one of four NPCs. These NPCs will give you a brief overview of the event, but understanding the mechanics is up to you.
The core of the Expedition involves a Detonator and Explosives, which you'll find in the middle of the event area. A new UI element for Explosives will appear on the bottom-right of your screen. Your goal is to strategically place these Explosives to trigger the following:
- Runic Monsters: Spawned by Explosives detonated near Red Markers. The size of the Marker determines the size of the Runic Monster pack. These monsters are then empowered by Unearthed Remnants.
- Unearthed Remnants: Indicated by a tooltip above a relic on the ground, these offer both beneficial and negative event modifiers. For instance, monsters might deal more Elemental damage, but the Rarity of items from Excavated Chests could increase.
- Excavated Chests: Spawned by Explosives near Black Markers with the spiral Expedition symbol. These chests contain event-specific rewards like Artifacts, Logbooks, powerful Currencies, Waystones, and endgame gear.
To use the Explosives, click the button on your screen and hover over the Expedition area to see the area of effect. Explosives will only trigger Markers within the green circle radius. For optimal results, spread out your Explosives to avoid overlapping the AoE circles.
After placing your Explosives, return to the Detonator and interact with it to activate all Markers within the Explosives' AoE, spawn empowered Runic Monsters, and start the event. If you die, the map resets, but you can leave and return later to tackle the Expedition at your own pace. A strategy involves detonating Explosives, retreating, and then returning to deal with the spawned enemies using powerful AoE abilities.
Expedition Pinnacle Map
Expeditions can yield Expedition Logbooks, which are dropped by Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests. To access the Expedition Map, speak with Dannig in your Hideout, slot the Logbook into the bottom slot, and click "Open Portals". These portals around the Map Device lead to an expansive Expedition event with more than triple the usual number of Explosives.
The Expedition Pinnacle Map system includes a Pinnacle Boss named Olroth. He doesn't always spawn, but higher-level maps increase the likelihood. A skull icon on the minimap indicates Olroth's presence. Strategically place your Explosives to reach this skull and engage Olroth. Defeating him earns you 2x Expedition Passive Skill Tree points, which you can use in a dedicated section of the Atlas Passive Skill Tree for this event.
Expedition Passive Skill Tree
Located within the Atlas Passive Skill Tree menu, the Expedition Passive Skill Tree enhances the event by boosting Expedition Currency rewards, increasing Monster spawns, and amplifying the effects of Remnants. To access your Expedition passives, open your Atlas Map, select the Atlas Passive Skill Tree menu on the top-left, and look to the top right of the screen.
The Expedition Passive Skill Tree has a distinctive glowing blue spiral design, with eight Notable nodes and eight nodes that ramp up the difficulty of Logbooks and the Olroth boss. Each time you defeat Olroth, you earn 2x Expedition Passive Skill points, which you should use to increase the event's difficulty for new Notable nodes.
Notable Expedition Passive | Effect | Requirements |
---|
Extreme Archaeology | Reduces Explosives to 1 total, but gives it a 150% boost to radius, 100% boost to placement range, and 20% less enemy Life | N/A |
Disturbed Rest | Maps contain 50% more Runic Monster Flags | N/A |
Detailed Records | 50% more Logbooks will drop by Runic Monsters, and Logbooks will always spawn with 3x Modifiers | Disturbed Rest |
Timed Detonations | 50% more Artifacts will drop from Runic Monsters, and Detonation chains travel 50% faster | N/A |
Legendary Battles | 50% more Rare monsters in Expeditions, 50% more Exotic Coinage drops from Runic Monsters | Timed Detonations |
Frail Treasures | Expeditions always contain 3x more Excavated Chest Markers, but they disappear after 5 seconds | N/A |
Weight of History | 35% boost to Remnant effects | N/A |
Unearthed Anomalies | Remnants gain an additional Suffix and Prefix modifier | Weight of History |
For optimal rewards, focus on 'Disturbed Rest', 'Detailed Records', and 'Timed Detonations'. These nodes significantly boost your rewards with minimal downsides. Next, consider 'Weight of History', 'Unearthed Anomalies', and 'Legendary Battles' for even greater rewards, though they increase difficulty. Avoid 'Extreme Archaeology', as reducing Explosives from five to one severely limits your rewards and is costly to respec.
PoE 2 Expedition Event Rewards
### Artifacts & Coinage Currencies Are Used For Purchasing Gear
The primary rewards from Expeditions are Artifacts. There are four types, each used to trade with a specific Expedition vendor for various types of gear:
Reward | Use | Gear |
---|
Broken Circle Artifact | Used for trade with Gwennen | Weapons |
Black Scythe Artifact | Used for trade with Tujen | Belts and Jewelry |
Order Artifact | Used for trade with Rog | Armor |
Sun Artifact | Used for trade with Dannig | Used to acquire other Artifacts |
Exotic Coinage | Refreshes the inventory of any Expedition vendor | N/A |
Each Expedition features one of these vendors, so you can only access one vendor's inventory per encounter. Artifacts are not consumed upon map completion, so remember to carry them into Expedition Maps.
Exotic Coinage, another reward from Expeditions, can be used to refresh the inventory of any of the four Expedition NPCs.
Expedition Logbooks Open A Unique Expedition Map To Progress
Expedition Logbooks, which drop rarely from Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests, are crucial to the Expedition Pinnacle system. Bring a Logbook to Dannig to open the Expedition Map and explore various Expedition zones.
There's a chance for the Pinnacle Boss, Olroth, to spawn in these maps. Defeating him grants 2x Expedition Passive Skill Tree points, high-tier Currency, and a chance at exclusive Uniques. As you increase the difficulty of your Expedition Maps and Logbooks, Olroth becomes more likely to appear, and his rewards become more valuable.
