This concludes my retro game eShop series, as suitable console selections dwindle. I've saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded expectations, boasting a legendary library still seeing re-releases. Here are ten favorites (in no particular order):
Klonoa, a deserving yet underrated 2.5D platformer, features a charming cat-like protagonist navigating a dream world to thwart danger. It boasts vibrant visuals, tight gameplay, memorable bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel is slightly inferior, both are bundled for a complete experience.
A monumental title, Final Fantasy VII revolutionized the Western RPG market and propelled both Square Enix and the PlayStation to new heights. While the remake exists, this original offers a classic experience, albeit with noticeable polygonal limitations. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.
Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise, launching it into the mainstream. While later entries became more eccentric, the original remains a gripping, action-packed adventure, less philosophical and more reminiscent of a G.I. Joe episode. The engaging gameplay is a significant draw, and its PlayStation 2 successors are also available on Switch.
G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shooter into 3D. Though the polygons show their age, the vibrant colors, innovative enemy capture mechanic, and inventive bosses create a compelling shooter experience.
While overshadowed by its predecessor, Chrono Cross stands on its own as a visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit unevenly developed, cast of characters. Its exceptional soundtrack is a highlight.
Among the Mega Man X series, X4 stands out for its polished gameplay and cohesive design. The Legacy Collection offers a chance to rediscover this standout entry.
A unique platformer blending adventure elements with satisfying action, Tomba! from the creator of Ghosts ‘n Goblins, offers a deceptively challenging experience.
Though originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Grandia, spiritually akin to Lunar, provides a bright and cheerful adventure with a rewarding combat system.
This collection features the first three Tomb Raider games, showcasing Lara Croft's iconic beginnings. The original remains a strong entry, focusing on tomb raiding over pure action.
This Japanese release, a deconstruction of the RPG genre, offers a unique adventure game experience with a distinctive, almost punk-like aesthetic. It's not consistently fun, but its unconventional approach and message are compelling.
This concludes the list. Share your favorite PlayStation 1 games on the Switch in the comments below! Thanks for reading!
