Nintendo has filed a new patent hinting at a major design shift for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2—specifically, Joy-Con controllers that can be attached upside down. As reported by VGC, the patent outlines a system where gyroscopic controls function similarly to smartphones, automatically adjusting orientation regardless of how the device is held. This means the screen and controls could adapt seamlessly when the console is flipped, offering a dynamic and flexible gaming experience.
The new Joy-Con design appears to replace the original Switch’s rail-based attachment system with magnets, allowing the controllers to securely connect in multiple orientations—upside down, reversed, or right-side up. This innovation wouldn’t drastically change the hardware itself but would give players greater freedom in how they hold and customize their setup. For example, users could position the headphone jack, buttons, or analog sticks based on personal preference or ergonomic comfort.
According to the patent, “The user can use the game system by mounting the right controller and the left controller on the opposite side to the main body device.” It also notes, “The user can insert the earphone into the voice input/output connector from the preferred direction,” suggesting improved accessibility and usability no matter how the device is oriented.
If implemented in the final product, this flip-friendly functionality could inspire new gameplay mechanics and control schemes, especially in motion-controlled or handheld modes. While still speculative, the patent strongly indicates Nintendo is exploring more versatile ways to interact with the Switch 2.
Nintendo is expected to reveal full details during a special Nintendo Direct event scheduled for April 2 at 6am PT / 9am ET / 2pm GMT. The console itself is rumored to launch between June and September 2024. Although no official release window has been confirmed, insider reports and hands-on events leading up to June, along with comments from Greedfall 2 publisher Nacon, point to a mid-to-late year launch.
The Nintendo Switch 2 was first teased in January with a short trailer confirming key features like backward compatibility and the inclusion of a second USB-C port. However, many details—such as the full game lineup, technical specifications, and the purpose of the mysterious new Joy-Con button—remain under wraps. One popular theory gaining traction is the potential for Joy-Con to function as a mouse when placed on a surface, further expanding input options.
