After months of speculation, Nintendo has confirmed the existence of the Nintendo Switch 2 with a brief teaser. The trailer showcases a refined design while retaining the hybrid functionality of its predecessor.
The teaser highlights a larger screen, a more robust kickstand, and magnetically attaching Joy-Cons – a significant change from the original Switch's rail system. A second USB-C port is also included on the console itself.
Backward compatibility has been confirmed. Nintendo stated that both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games will be playable, although some titles may have limited or no support. Specific unsupported titles will be detailed on the Nintendo website at a later date. Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions will also remain valid on the Switch 2.
While no exclusive titles have been officially announced, the teaser hinted at a potential new Mario Kart installment, possibly Mario Kart 9. Rumors also suggest Gotham Knights might be coming to the Switch 2, though this remains unconfirmed by both Warner Bros. Games and Nintendo. Nintendo is hosting "Nintendo Switch 2 Experience" events in major cities worldwide, giving fans a chance to try the console before launch.
Registration opens January 17, 2025, at 12:00 P.M. PT / 2:00 P.M. CT / 3:00 P.M. ET, and closes January 26, 2025, at 11:59 P.M. local time for each location. Selection is via a lottery system. A Nintendo Account is required to register.
