Nintendo Switch 2 Leak Hints at Huge Storage Improvement

Leaked GameStop SKUs Suggest Nintendo Switch 2 Will Support microSD Express Cards

Recent leaks point towards a significant upgrade for the Nintendo Switch 2's storage capabilities. Several GameStop stock keeping units (SKUs), allegedly for upcoming Switch 2 accessories, list "Switch 2 Exp Micro SD Card" products with capacities of 256GB and 512GB. This strongly suggests compatibility with the microSD Express standard.

This represents a substantial improvement over the Nintendo Switch's current UHS-I microSD card support. microSD Express offers dramatically faster transfer speeds—approximately 985 MB/s compared to the UHS-I's roughly 95 MB/s—a speed increase exceeding 900%. This boost is attributed to the microSD Express standard's use of the NVMe protocol, similar to high-performance SSDs.

Capacity also sees a major leap. While UHS-I cards max out at 2TB, microSD Express supports cards up to a staggering 128TB. The leaked GameStop SKUs price the 256GB card at $49.99 and the 512GB card at $84.99. Additional SKUs were found for a standard Switch 2 carrying case ($19.99) and two deluxe versions ($29.99).

The leaks, originally shared by Reddit user Opposite-Chemistry96, corroborate previous rumors of the Switch 2 entering mass production in late 2024. Numerous hardware details have surfaced since Q4 2024, further fueling speculation. While these accessories are likely unofficial, their appearance adds weight to the ongoing rumors. Nintendo has committed to an official reveal before the end of its fiscal year (March 31, 2025), leaving just a few months for the official announcement.

UHS-I vs. microSD Express:

Feature UHS-I microSD Express
Transfer Speed ~95 MB/s ~985 MB/s
Max Capacity 2TB 128TB

The potential for significantly faster transfer speeds and vastly increased storage capacity with microSD Express cards promises a major enhancement for the Nintendo Switch 2.
