Nintendo is currently weighing several factors to determine the price of the upcoming Switch 2. While industry analysts have speculated to IGN that the console might launch at $400 later this year, Nintendo has not officially confirmed the pricing yet.
In a recent Q&A session aimed at investors, Shuntaro Furukawa, the president of Nintendo, addressed the pricing considerations for the Switch 2. He emphasized that the company is mindful of current inflation rates and the significant shifts in exchange rates since the original Switch was released in 2017. Furukawa stated, “We are aware that, in addition to how inflation is currently proceeding, the exchange rate environment has also changed significantly since around the time we launched Nintendo Switch in 2017.”
Furthermore, Furukawa highlighted the importance of understanding consumer expectations regarding price ranges for Nintendo products. He added, “We also need to consider the price range that consumers expect for Nintendo products. We think a multifaceted consideration of these factors is needed when deciding on the price of a product. I cannot tell you a specific price for Nintendo Switch 2 at this time, but we are taking various factors into account.”
The original Nintendo Switch debuted at $299.99 and has maintained that price for several years. With nearly eight years having passed, the question arises: what price range do consumers now expect for Nintendo products? Competitors like Sony and Microsoft have recently raised the prices of their current-generation consoles due to increased costs, inflation, and currency fluctuations.
Analysts predict that Nintendo may set the Switch 2's price at $400. This would mark an increase from the original Switch's launch price of $300, which Nintendo continues to uphold outside of promotional sales or bundles. The Nintendo Switch OLED model is currently priced at $350, while the Nintendo Switch Lite retails for $200. Although specifics about the Switch 2's specs and features are scarce beyond Nintendo's initial reveal, the anticipation is for a more robust and powerful next-gen console, suggesting that $400 could be a feasible price point.

Nintendo has scheduled a Switch 2 Direct for April 2, following the console's reveal last month. This event will offer a deeper dive into the console, including its form factor, a sneak peek at what appears to be Mario Kart 9, and hints at a potential ‘mouse’ mode for the new Joy-Con.
Several questions remain about the Switch 2, such as the function of the new Joy-Con button, the console's performance capabilities, and the purpose of its new ports. Nintendo is also planning Switch 2 hands-on events in cities worldwide to give fans a chance to experience the console firsthand.
Shuntaro Furukawa also confirmed that Nintendo has no intentions of altering the price of the original Switch despite the imminent launch of the Switch 2, indicating that the pricing of the current model will remain stable.
