Nintendo 64 Classic Set to Resurface on Modern Platforms

Updated ESRB Ratings Hint at Imminent Doom 64 Release for PS5 and Xbox Series X

Recent updates to the ESRB ratings suggest a potential upcoming release of Doom 64 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. While neither Bethesda nor id Software have made an official announcement, the updated ESRB listing strongly indicates the game is nearing release. This isn't unprecedented; the ESRB has accurately leaked release information before official announcements.

The original Doom 64, a Nintendo 64 exclusive, received a remastered port for PS4 and Xbox One in 2020, boasting enhanced visuals and a new chapter. This new-gen port would offer players a chance to experience the classic title with modern performance enhancements. The ESRB rating doesn't include a PC listing, but the 2020 version was released on Steam, and PC players can already enjoy Doom 64 via modding existing Doom titles.

Given Bethesda's history of surprise releases for older Doom titles, a stealth launch for Doom 64 remains a possibility. The existence of the ESRB rating, without accompanying fanfare from the publisher, further fuels this speculation. Fans should anticipate a relatively swift release, as past ESRB ratings have often preceded game launches by only a few months.

Looking beyond Doom 64, 2025 promises another exciting addition to the Doom franchise: Doom: The Dark Ages. While a concrete release date is yet to be confirmed, rumors point towards a January announcement and a launch sometime in 2025. The release of updated versions of classic Doom titles serves as a compelling prelude to the next major installment in the series.
