Minecraft's creator, Markus "Notch" Persson, hinted at a potential Minecraft 2 in a recent social media poll. The announcement, or rather, strong suggestion, sparked significant excitement among fans.
A Spiritual Successor in the Works?
Persson, in a poll on X (formerly Twitter), revealed he's developing a game blending roguelike and first-person dungeon crawler elements. However, he also expressed openness to creating a "spiritual successor" to Minecraft. The poll overwhelmingly favored the Minecraft-inspired option, garnering 81.5% of nearly 300,000 votes.

In a subsequent post, Persson confirmed his seriousness, essentially declaring he'd "basically announced Minecraft 2." He acknowledged the massive popularity of the original and expressed a desire to reignite his passion for game development. He emphasized that while he's open to either project, he's committed to creating a new game.
It's important to note that Persson sold the Minecraft IP and Mojang Studios to Microsoft in 2014. Therefore, any new project will need to avoid direct infringement on the existing IP. Persson assured fans that he respects Mojang and Microsoft's work and intends to create a game that doesn't unfairly compete with their efforts.
Persson also admitted to concerns about the challenges of creating a spiritual successor, acknowledging the inherent risks involved. Despite these anxieties, he's leaning toward the project that fans clearly desire.
While awaiting this potential "Minecraft sequel," fans can anticipate upcoming Minecraft-themed amusement parks in the UK and US, and the release of the "Minecraft Movie" later in 2025.
