A Marvel Rivals Player Created a Playable Doctor Octopus Concept and Fans Love It

Feb 26,2025 Author: Nora

NetEase Games' commitment to releasing a new Marvel Rivals hero every half-season hasn't stifled creativity within the player base. A talented player, WickedCube, recently showcased a compelling playable Doctor Octopus concept.

A 30-second video posted on Reddit, r/MarvelRivals, depicts what appears to be in-game footage featuring a pre-Hulk Bruce Banner. However, the true focus is an impressive, albeit rough, interpretation of Doctor Octopus, showcasing his eight-armed capabilities within the Marvel Rivals engine.

The concept, which garnered over 16,000 upvotes, features unique abilities such as "Havoc Claw" (melee) and "Wrecking Grip" (ranged). Doc Ock's arms magnetically interact with the environment, enabling traversal reminiscent of flight. WickedCube’s design cleverly addresses the challenge of incorporating Doc Ock's tentacles into a 3D playable character, a feat not yet achieved in other games, according to the creator.

Inspired by recent fan art and a PSN outage that prevented him from playing Marvel Rivals, WickedCube, an indie game developer, built this prototype in Unity. He previously worked at Keen Software House (Space Engineers) before pursuing independent projects. This Doc Ock creation served as a personal project and a demonstration of his skills.

The overwhelmingly positive response has encouraged WickedCube to share his process through a future YouTube tutorial series and open-source the code on GitHub. He also plans to release playable versions on Itch.io.

NetEase's Marvel Rivals will receive a mid-season update on February 21st, introducing the Human Torch and The Thing, following the recent release of Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman. While NetEase hasn't confirmed a Doctor Octopus addition, WickedCube's creation highlights the game's vast potential and the community's enthusiasm for expanding the roster. He's already brainstorming concepts for future heroes, including Nightcrawler and Professor Xavier. The update will also include balance adjustments and gameplay refinements. Despite recent layoffs at NetEase's Seattle branch, the game's future appears bright, exceeding expectations with its rapid character releases.
