Mario Kart World Tops Zelda Launch Sales in Japan
Oct 19,2025Author: Gabriel
Nintendo Switch 2's launch title Mario Kart World has surpassed physical sales records in Japan, outperforming The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's three-day debut figures from the original Switch launch.
Industry tracker Famitsu reports Mario Kart World sold an impressive 782,566 physical copies during its first three days (June 2-8), claiming the top sales spot. These figures exclude digital downloads from My Nintendo Store, suggesting actual sales are significantly higher. The data covers retail purchases, console-bundled copies, and Game-Key Card transactions.
By comparison, Breath of the Wild moved approximately 193,060 physical units during its 2017 Switch launch window. This means Mario Kart World's Japanese retail performance currently quadruples Zelda's initial sales.
The sales disparity aligns with Nintendo's hardware momentum - the Switch 2 became their fastest-selling console ever, moving 3.5 million units globally in four days. It's currently outpacing the original Switch's launch by a 2:1 ratio. The supply-limited first-generation Switch sold 2.74 million units in its initial month.
Switch 2 titles dominated Japanese retail charts, claiming five of Famitsu's Top 10 spots. Notable entries include Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma (#6, 10,877 units), Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (#7, 7,992 units), the Breath of the Wild re-release (#8, 7,529 units), and Yakuza 0 (#9, 7,486 units). Elden Ring: Nightreign (PS5) ranked #5 as the sole non-Nintendo entry.

While Mario Kart World leads in initial sales, Breath of the Wild's long-term performance - especially with its Switch 2 HD re-release - may yet challenge this momentum. The Zelda title's enduring popularity could see renewed purchases from returning fans.
