M3GAN Returns with New Interactive Features

Blumhouse, a leading horror film studio, is marking its 15th anniversary by bringing the 2022 hit M3GAN back to theaters ahead of its sequel's release. This limited theatrical run includes an innovative but polarizing twist: it actively encourages smartphone use during screenings.

As part of Shudder's Halfway to Halloween event, M3GAN will be featured alongside Ma and Annabelle in special one-night screenings. These showings incorporate Meta's "Movie Mate" technology, letting audiences interact with M3GAN via chatbot while offering real-time second-screen content.

"Movie Mate is exclusively available in theaters," the studio told Variety. "Moviegoers initiate the experience by messaging @M3GAN on Instagram."

The technology aims to enhance the viewing experience using Meta's platform while building anticipation for M3GAN 2.0's June 27 release.

Fans can expect behind-the-scenes footage, director messages, and occasional live appearances from the cast. This experimental approach challenges traditional theater etiquette—its reception remains to be seen, though we hope such innovations won't become standard practice for regular screenings.

M3GAN's special screening occurs nationwide on April 30, followed by Annabelle on May 7 and Ma on May 14. The sequel M3GAN 2.0 premieres June 27 in U.S. theaters.
