What Should James Gunn's Second DCU Movie Be? We Have Ideas
Mar 03,2025Author: Zoey
James Gunn recently updated reporters on the DC Universe's status at a DC Studios presentation. Among other announcements, Gunn revealed he's already writing the script for his next DCU film after Superman. He's certainly busy!
Gunn remained tight-lipped about the project, likely delaying an announcement until after Superman's July release. However, several possibilities align well with his style. Which franchises and characters best suit his unique vision? Which films should be prioritized as Gunn and Peter Safran build this new shared universe? Here are some strong contenders for Gunn's next directorial effort.
DC Universe: Upcoming Movies and TV Shows

Batman: The Brave and the Bold
While Batman is a cinematic staple, Batman: The Brave and the Bold generates considerable buzz. This film reboots Batman, introducing the DCU's Caped Crusader. Unlike recent iterations, it emphasizes the Bat-family, including Bruce Wayne's son, Damian.
Despite Batman's proven success, The Brave and the Bold faces uncertainty. Progress seems slow, and Andy Muschietti's directorial involvement remains questionable. Introducing a second cinematic Batman alongside Robert Pattinson's presents a significant challenge.
The DCU needs a compelling Batman. His importance necessitates a well-executed portrayal. If Muschietti departs, Gunn stepping in could ensure the project's success (a possibility already being discussed). Gunn's expertise in crafting emotional father-son narratives (seen in Guardians of the Galaxy) makes him ideally suited to explore Bruce and Damian's relationship.
The Flash
The Flash is crucial to any DC Universe, a key Justice League member and a pivotal figure in multiverse stories. However, his live-action history is turbulent. The CW series showcased a successful ensemble approach (despite its later decline), while Ezra Miller's DCEU portrayal faltered, resulting in a box office failure.
The Flash's image is tarnished. A fresh perspective is needed, avoiding clichés like Flashpoint. The film should center on Barry Allen (and/or Wally West), preventing Batman from overshadowing the lead.
Gunn's talent for dynamic action and relatable character development (evident in the Guardians films) would greatly benefit a Flash movie.
The Authority
Gunn openly discussed the challenges of adapting The Authority, noting difficulty in finding a unique angle that avoids overlap with The Boys and similar projects.
The Authority's importance to the expanding DCU is undeniable. It was among the initial announced projects, and María Gabriela de Faría's Engineer appears in Superman. The conflict between the optimism of heroes like Superman and The Authority's cynicism is a key narrative element.
Gunn's skill with misfit heroes and engaging dialogue makes him a strong fit for this project. While challenging, Gunn likely could successfully navigate this adaptation.
Amanda Waller/ARGUS Movie
Gunn acknowledged setbacks for the planned Waller series. This isn't surprising given his commitments to Superman, Peacemaker: Season 2, and Creature Commandos. As these commitments lessen, prioritizing Waller (possibly as a feature film instead of a series) makes sense.
Waller and ARGUS are crucial to the nascent DCU. ARGUS features in Superman, and Rick Flag, Sr. appears in both Superman and Peacemaker: Season 2. Focusing on this element and its central figure is logical.
Batman & Superman: World's Finest
Batman v Superman fell short of expectations, despite the potential of a Dark Knight/Man of Steel team-up. The film's dark tone alienated some viewers.
A more positive portrayal of their friendship and collaborative efforts is needed. Gunn's style would be well-suited to this kind of crossover. Combining his Superman with The Brave and the Bold's Batman could be a significant success for the DCU.
Titans
The Teen Titans boast a large fanbase and a rich history. While Max's Titans series had flaws, it demonstrated the characters' viability in live-action.
A Titans film is potentially more appealing than a new Justice League film. Their dysfunctional yet loving dynamic differs from the League. Gunn's success with the Guardians suggests he could effectively portray the Titans' family dynamic.
Justice League Dark
The DCU's "Gods and Monsters" phase, featuring Swamp Thing and Creature Commandos, indicates a supernatural focus. Establishing a supernatural Justice League counterpart is logical.
Justice League Dark offers an opportunity to showcase magical heroes like Zatanna, Etrigan, Deadman, Swamp Thing, and John Constantine. Their inherent dysfunction aligns with Gunn's storytelling style. Including a character like Batman or Wonder Woman could broaden the appeal.
Which DC film should Gunn direct next after Superman? Vote in the poll and share your thoughts in the comments.
