Sony's CES 2025 showcase surprised attendees with several film and TV adaptations of its popular PlayStation games. Among the announcements was an official movie adaptation of the acclaimed Helldivers 2.
This cinematic venture is a joint effort between Sony Productions and Sony Pictures. While specifics remain scarce, Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, confirmed the project during the CES presentation, stating their collaboration with Sony Pictures to bring the popular PlayStation title to the big screen.
Helldivers 2, developed by Arrowhead Games, draws significant inspiration from the cult classic Starship Troopers, depicting futuristic soldiers defending a totalitarian regime against alien threats. The game's unique blend of action and satirical commentary has garnered a dedicated fanbase.
Naturally, fans are eager for details. While Sony and Arrowhead remain tight-lipped, Arrowhead's CCO, Johan Pilestedt, addressed concerns about the film's faithfulness to the game's source material. He confirmed Arrowhead will have some level of involvement, but acknowledged the studio lacks filmmaking expertise and will not have final creative control—a decision he deemed appropriate.
The choice of Helldivers 2 for adaptation, given the existing Starship Troopers franchise, is intriguing. The project appears to be in its early stages, suggesting further announcements may be some time away.
The game's immense success—selling 12 million copies in just 12 weeks, making it the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game ever—and its recent resurgence following the Illuminate update (introducing a third playable faction) further fuels anticipation for the film.
Sony's CES announcements also included a Horizon Zero Dawn movie and a Ghost of Tsushima anime series, demonstrating a significant investment in video game adaptations. This follows the success of HBO's The Last of Us, with Season 2 slated for an April release.
