Rockstar has postponed the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 to May 26, 2026, shifting from its original fall 2025 target.
In an official statement, Rockstar expressed regret for the substantial delay of the highly anticipated game, projected to be a record-breaking entertainment event.
"We deeply apologize for this later-than-anticipated release," Rockstar stated. "The overwhelming enthusiasm for a new Grand Theft Auto is truly humbling for our team. We appreciate your continued support and patience as we finalize the game.
"Our goal with every release is to surpass your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no different. We hope you understand our need for additional time to deliver the quality you expect and deserve.
"We are excited to share more details with you in the near future."
Rockstar’s announcement confirms the GTA 6 release date but includes no new assets, prolonging the wait for Trailer 2. The statement also omits details on launch platforms, fueling speculation that GTA 6 could launch on PC alongside PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S in May 2026.
"There’s always a chance of delays, and absolute guarantees can backfire," Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two, told IGN in February when asked about confidence in meeting the fall 2025 target. "But we’re feeling very optimistic."
In a note to investors issued today, May 2, Zelnick endorsed the decision to push GTA 6 into Take-Two’s 2027 fiscal year.
"We fully support Rockstar Games’ choice to take extra time to fulfill their ambitious vision for Grand Theft Auto VI, which is set to deliver a revolutionary, blockbuster experience that exceeds fan expectations.
“While we acknowledge the significance of shifting release dates and the immense global anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI, our commitment to excellence remains unwavering. As we roll out our robust lineup, we anticipate sustained business growth and increased value for our shareholders over multiple years.”
The GTA 6 delay clears the second half of 2025 for other titles, potentially giving games like Gearbox’s Borderlands 4, EA’s Battlefield, Bungie’s Marathon, and Sony’s Ghost of Yotei more room to shine. Nintendo, gearing up for the Switch 2 launch, will likely benefit from the postponement as well.
However, developers and publishers who accelerated their releases to avoid competing with GTA 6’s expected fall 2025 debut may be frustrated. Those planning launches around May 2026 will now need to reassess their strategies.
