George R.R. Martin, renowned author of Game of Thrones, has signed on as producer for an upcoming animated Hercules film – marking his latest project outside the unfinished Winds of Winter novel.
The Hollywood Reporter reveals Martin will produce this innovative adaptation titled A Dozen Tough Jobs, reimagining Hercules' mythological labors through the eyes of a 1920s Mississippi farmer. Notably, scripting duties fall to Joe R. Lansdale, author of the cult novel Bubba Ho-Tep.
"George R.R. Martin possesses unparalleled expertise in crafting epic narratives and expansive universes," remarked David Steward II of Lion Forge Entertainment. "This project transcends simple retelling – we're delivering a culturally rich, groundbreaking interpretation grounded in history yet venturing into mythical innovation."
Fans anticipating Winds of Winter, the next installment in Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, face further disappointment. Nearly fourteen years have passed since A Dance with Dragons' 2011 release, with no publication date in sight.
The 76-year-old author maintains plans to conclude his fantasy saga with A Dream of Spring – a finale the HBO adaptation famously outpaced with controversial results.
Beyond this animation project, Martin remains active across multiple Game of Thrones spinoffs including House of the Dragon. His contributions extend to historical fiction within Westeros and even video game worldbuilding – notably crafting Elden Ring's backstory.
In a September 2024 blog post, Martin confessed television commitments consumed most of his year, delaying writing progress. His April 2025 update contained blunt clarification: "No, the book isn't coming soon."
