Recent Nintendo filings have sparked excitement among fans about a potential new GameCube controller, possibly for playing classic GameCube titles through the Nintendo Switch Online service on the upcoming Switch 2.
As noted by Nintendo Life, a recent FCC filing from Nintendo for a "game controller" aligns with the Switch 2 and hints at a wireless Bluetooth model.
Online investigators on Famiboards then dug deeper, noting that one image in the filing shows a label placement that matches the back of a GameCube controller—specifically behind the C-Stick.

Although this could simply be a new Switch 2 Pro Controller, current speculation leans toward it being used with Nintendo’s Switch Online service, which already supports wireless retro controllers.
This has sparked conversations about a potential GameCube library coming to Nintendo Switch Online. Fans have been eager to see GameCube classics on the Switch for years, but so far Nintendo has focused on re-releasing titles from the NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy. Will the Switch 2 finally bring GameCube games back in a major way?
The Switch 2 was first shown in a short January trailer that highlighted backward compatibility and an additional USB-C port. Many details, including launch titles and the function of a mysterious new Joy-Con button, were left unconfirmed—though the Joy-Con mouse theory gained some attention.
A patent filed by Nintendo last month indicated that the Switch 2’s Joy-Cons may attach magnetically and work in either orientation, similar to how smartphones handle screen rotation. Unlike the original Switch’s locking rail mechanism, the new design uses magnets, presumably letting players attach the controllers from either side.
While this change may seem minor from a hardware standpoint, it would let users customize the placement of buttons, headphone jacks, and more. If it makes it to the final product, the flexible attachment could inspire unique gameplay features as well.

Analysts are predicting a $400 price point for the Switch 2, while some estimates go as high as $500. A release in June has also been floated as a possibility.
Although many questions about the Switch 2 remain unanswered, Nintendo has announced a Direct presentation for April 2 where more console details will be shared.
In the meantime, gamers looking for a dose of GameCube nostalgia can enjoy Metroid Prime Remastered on the Nintendo Switch.
