Civilization VII's launch has left many veteran players questioning the absence of a familiar face: Mahatma Gandhi. A staple in every Civilization game since 1991, his omission is notable. This absence, however, isn't a permanent one, according to Civilization VII lead designer Ed Beach.

Beach confirmed that Gandhi's inclusion is part of a longer-term DLC roadmap. He explained that Firaxis prioritizes a mix of established and new civilizations, leading to some omissions in the base game. Similar situations occurred with Mongolia and Persia in previous iterations. While some players express concern over missing civilizations like Great Britain (which, along with Carthage, is slated for release in March 2025 as part of The Crossroads of the World Collection DLC, followed by Bulgaria and Nepal), Beach assures fans that the team considers the broader picture when adding leaders and civilizations. Therefore, Gandhi's eventual return is highly likely.

Meanwhile, Firaxis is addressing the mixed user reviews on Steam. These reviews cite concerns about the user interface, limited map variety, and missing features. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged the negative feedback but expressed confidence in the game's long-term success, suggesting that the core Civilization audience will warm to the game with continued play.
