Final Fantasy IX Celebrates 25th Anniversary This Year
25th Anniversary Website Launched

Square Enix has unveiled a dedicated website marking Final Fantasy IX's 25th anniversary. The site confirms the company is "developing various commemorative projects including merchandise and collaborations."
The anniversary collection includes character figurines, plush toys, vinyl records, soundtrack CDs, art books, and more. Square Enix promises additional announcements in the coming months leading up to the anniversary.
Originally launched on July 7, 2000 for PlayStation, Final Fantasy IX has sold over 8.9 million copies globally. The game received multiple re-releases including a 2012 Japanese 25th Anniversary Ultimate Box edition, a 2016 mobile remaster, and ports to modern platforms between 2017-2019.
Potential FF9 Remake and Forgotten Anime Project

The anniversary website's launch has reignited speculation about a potential remake following the success of Final Fantasy VII's recent reimagining. FFIX ranked as Japan's 4th favorite Final Fantasy title in NHK's 2019 poll, making it a strong candidate for similar treatment.
The long-dormant anime adaptation, "Final Fantasy IX: The Black Mages' Legacy," remains uncertain. Announced in 2021, the series would have continued Vivi's story ten years after the original game through his descendants. Production company Cyber Group Studios, which held distribution rights, filed for bankruptcy in late 2024, though two potential buyers have expressed interest in reviving the project.
