Elden Ring Director: 'Duos Overlooked' for 3-Player Focus

Elden Ring Nightreign will soon transport players to the ever-changing realm of Limveld, where they can explore and battle for survival either alone or in teams of three. However, for those who prefer playing in pairs, it seems you’ll need to welcome a third adventurer into your group.

In an IGN interview with Elden Ring Nightreign director Junya Ishizaki, the project lead explained the decision to focus on solo and three-player modes as the core experiences. When asked why there isn’t an option for two players to join together without a third teammate, Ishizaki admitted the oversight.

"The straightforward answer is that we simply overlooked the possibility of a dedicated two-player mode during development—we sincerely apologize for that," Ishizaki stated. "As mentioned before, our goal was to create a cooperative multiplayer experience designed for three players, balanced around that number, which lies at the heart of Nightreign.

"Of course, as a player myself, I understand the desire to play solo at times, which we considered from the very beginning," Ishizaki continued. "So we put significant effort into developing a rewarding solo experience within the game’s rules and mechanics. Unfortunately, in focusing so heavily on both three-player and solo modes, we neglected the duo option. Still, this is something we’re reviewing and may address with post-launch support."

So, if you plan on teaming up with just one partner, be prepared to matchmake with a random third player. Who knows—you might end up with someone who’s exceptionally skilled.

For those going it alone, Elden Ring Nightreign has taken steps to accommodate solo adventurers. According to Ishizaki, the game’s parameters "adjust dynamically based on the number of players in a session," so lone wolves won't be overwhelmed in single-player mode.

You’ll also have access to self-revival mechanics, thoughtfully included for those playing solo. And if you join a trio, you’ll experience Nightreign exactly as envisioned—balanced for three. Whether or not duo support is added later, having an extra ally will surely help when facing the formidable bosses that await.

Elden Ring Nightreign launches on May 30, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
