Dynasty Warriors: Origins Rises from the Ashes of a Canceled Predecessor
The upcoming Dynasty Warriors: Origins, slated for release on January 17, 2025, boasts a unique origin story. Omega Force, the development studio, initially embarked on creating a tenth mainline installment in the Dynasty Warriors franchise. However, technological advancements spurred a pivotal decision: the cancellation of Dynasty Warriors 10 to pave the way for a more innovative and strategically rich experience in Origins.
Early access players have already experienced Origins' signature fast-paced hack-and-slash combat, set against the backdrop of China's Three Kingdoms Era. Players assume the role of an amnesiac protagonist, interacting with iconic historical figures. This new direction departs significantly from the planned structure of the abandoned Dynasty Warriors 10, which, according to producer Masamichi Oba (in an interview translated by SiliconEra from 4Gamer), would have resembled the stage-clearing format of Dynasty Warriors 7.
The decision to scrap Dynasty Warriors 10 stemmed from the transformative power of the PlayStation 5 and other contemporary consoles. As producer Tomohiko Sho explained, witnessing the potential of modern hardware prompted a strategic shift. While abandoning a fully developed project was challenging, the team salvaged valuable assets. Key elements from the canceled title, such as the free-roaming map and a more in-depth exploration of the Three Kingdoms narrative, found their way into Origins. This integration of elements from the "phantom number title" ensures that the canceled project's legacy lives on within the innovative gameplay of Dynasty Warriors: Origins.
