HBO is reportedly in advanced negotiations with acclaimed actor John Lithgow, known for his role as Lord Farquaad in Shrek, to portray the iconic Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in their upcoming Harry Potter series. While HBO remains tight-lipped, Variety suggests Lithgow is nearing a deal. This follows November reports naming Mark Rylance as a top contender for the role.
"We understand the significant interest surrounding this project and the resulting speculation," an HBO spokesperson stated. "We'll only confirm casting details once agreements are finalized."
Lithgow's extensive filmography includes The World According to Garp, Terms of Endearment, Footloose, Dexter, and The Crown, showcasing his versatility and range.

The series will prioritize British talent, mirroring the films. This is perhaps unsurprising given J.K. Rowling's reported involvement in the casting process.
Announced in April 2023, the Harry Potter series aims to be a faithful adaptation of the books, offering a more nuanced and detailed narrative than the films allowed. The series will be helmed by Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, producers of Succession, with Mylod also contributing writing credits, having previously worked on Game of Thrones.
