Both Blizzard Entertainment and Grinding Gear Games have remained silent on whether they will take action against Elon Musk's accounts after the billionaire reportedly admitted to cheating in their games, Diablo 4 and Path of Exile 2. Screenshots of a private conversation between Musk and a YouTuber revealed his confession of paying for account boosting in these action RPGs, sparking outrage among the gaming community.
Account boosting, where a player pays someone else to log into their account and elevate their rank, is considered cheating and violates the terms of service of most live service video games. Blizzard's end user license agreement explicitly prohibits such activities.
Following Musk's admission, players have expressed frustration and disappointment on the official forums of both games. A Path of Exile player questioned the enforcement of the terms of service, asking, "So now billionaires can buy their way to the top of the HC ladder as a vanity project like owning a football club. Are the TOS not being enforced even when openly broken?" Another player expressed concerns about the integrity of the game, wondering why Grinding Gear Games (GGG) had not yet banned Musk's account.
Similarly, on Battle.net, players are calling for Blizzard to take action against Musk's account, with one user stating, "Is boosting against the rules? If it is, then shouldn’t Elon Musk’s account get banned since he flat out admitted that he boosts his account? I assume he doesn’t get to break the rules just because…"
When approached by IGN for comment, both Grinding Gear Games and Blizzard declined to discuss individual player account behaviors or enforcement actions.
Musk has previously boasted about his gaming achievements, claiming to be in the top 20 players worldwide for Diablo 4 and mentioning his high-level character in Path of Exile 2. He has stated that gaming helps him "quiet my mind," especially on tough days. However, his gaming skills have come under scrutiny, particularly after a January livestream where he struggled with basic game mechanics in Path of Exile 2.
Suspicions that Musk might be paying for account boosting were confirmed when a video posted by the Diablo player NikoWrex showed Musk admitting to the practice in a direct message conversation. Musk justified his actions by saying, "It’s impossible to beat the players in Asia if you don’t, as they do!" He also clarified that he does not take credit for the high levels achieved through boosting, stating, "The top accounts in Diablo or PoE require multiple people playing the account to win a leveling race."
In defense of Musk, musician Grimes, who shares three children with him, tweeted about his gaming achievements, claiming to have witnessed his accomplishments firsthand.
Further allegations of cheating surfaced when Musk's Path of Exile 2 character was seen active in the game while he was attending Donald Trump's inauguration in Washington.
