Hulu may be bringing back Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Variety reports a reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially returning as Buffy, albeit in a recurring role. The series will focus on a new Slayer.
Acclaimed director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) is reportedly in talks to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not involved.
Whedon's absence follows previous allegations of creating a toxic work environment on the original Buffy and its spin-off, Angel.
Plot details remain scarce, but the new series will center on a new Slayer, with Gellar's potential return adding a significant element.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran for seven seasons (1997-2003), followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to fight supernatural forces. She was aided by friends Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris, and Watcher Rupert Giles. The series' legacy continued through a spin-off, Angel, and subsequent comic books.
