PC gaming is largely synonymous with keyboard and mouse control, especially for genres like first-person shooters and strategy games that benefit from precise aiming and control. However, some PC games are surprisingly better suited to controllers. Games emphasizing fast-paced movement or melee combat often feel more intuitive and enjoyable with a gamepad. This is particularly true for titles originating on consoles and later ported to PC.
While many PC releases strive for robust keyboard and mouse support, several titles released in late 2024 and early 2025 highlight the continued relevance of controller-based gaming on PC. While many recent releases, such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Infinity Nikki, Marvel Rivals, Path of Exile 2, and Delta Force, are arguably better with keyboard and mouse, some exceptions exist. For example, Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered offers a slightly improved experience with a gamepad, though the difference isn't drastic.
Several upcoming PC game releases show promise for enhanced controller play:
- Freedom Wars Remastered: A PS Vita port echoing the Monster Hunter formula, suggesting natural controller compatibility.
- Tales of Graces f Remastered: The Tales series consistently benefits from gamepad control, and this remaster is expected to follow suit.
- Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Given the predecessor's superior controller experience on PC, and the similar combat system, Rebirth is likely to follow suit.
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: A PS5 port to PC usually implies a controller-centric design, although keyboard and mouse may still provide a viable alternative.
A noteworthy 2024 Soulslike game is also included in this list (see below).
