Sid Meier's Civilization 7 is set to revolutionize the franchise with its VR version, slated for release this Spring 2025. Dive into the details of Civ 7 VR and get the latest updates on the entire Civilization 7 experience.
Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 (Civ 7) is making its grand entrance into the world of virtual and mixed reality, exclusively on Meta Quest 3 and 3S. The announcement came during the Civ World Summit Event on February 8, 2025, marking a significant milestone for 2K Games and Firaxis Games.
Civ 7 Executive Franchise Producer Dennis Shirk shared his enthusiasm in a recent blog post on the 2K website. We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!
Shirk exclaimed.
Meta Director of Games Chris Pruett also weighed in, expressing his confidence in the VR version's potential. With the recent release of Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it’s an awesome time for mixed reality,
he said. Pruett added, Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans.
It's worth noting that while Civ 7 will be available on PlayStation consoles, Civ 7 VR will not be released on PSVR2 at this time.
Civ 7 VR introduces an innovative Command Table where players can strategize and interact with the game world. This feature allows players to zoom in and out, offering a unique tabletop game-like experience. The game lets the players 'peer down from high above or lean all the way in to appreciate the finer details of buildings and units, like a tabletop game come to life,'
2K Games stated.
Players can choose between immersive virtual reality or mixed reality, seamlessly switching between modes. In virtual reality, players find themselves in an ornate museum overlooking a personalized vista based on their chosen leader; in mixed reality, the Command Table adapts to the player's real-world surroundings.
The game supports single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes, accommodating up to four players with Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets. Players can incorporate AI-controlled opponents, collaborate with friends, or challenge other human players to determine who will stand the test of time. During gameplay, players can interact with their friends and opponents as their chosen world leaders across the Command Table. A 2K Account and a Meta Account are required for online multiplayer.
Firaxis Games has actively addressed player feedback from Civ 7’s early access phase. The official Twitter (X) page announced the team's commitment to resolving issues highlighted by the community. Civ 7’s Advanced Access, available to Deluxe Edition and Founder’s Edition purchasers, began on February 6, 2025. Despite receiving mixed reviews on Steam, particularly concerning the User Interface, Firaxis is taking action.
The studio has outlined plans to improve the UI, making interactions more intuitive, enhancing map readability, and refining overall polish. They are also considering community-requested features such as adding teams to multiplayer, introducing a wider variety of map types, and more. A quality-of-life update is slated for March, focusing on UI adjustments, AI balance, diplomacy and crisis tweaks, and additional bug fixes.
Civilization 7 VR is set to launch in Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, though a specific date has yet to be announced. Meanwhile, Civilization 7 is currently in early access and will have its worldwide release on February 11, 2025, across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
