Avowed offers five distinct Backgrounds, each influencing dialogue options and providing a unique starting weapon. However, all equipment and abilities remain accessible regardless of chosen Background. Let's explore each:

• Arcane Scholar: This scholarly Background grants access to unique dialogue options rooted in academic knowledge. Your character, a graduate of Bragganhyl Academy, was arrested for publishing a treatise challenging a local lord's authority, but subsequently recruited by the emperor. Expect dialogue reflecting expertise in occult studies, legal precedent, history, and poetry.

• Court Augur: This Background presents a tragic narrative, potentially leading to being perceived as a witch. Visions of villagers turning against the character following a crop failure fueled suspicion. Fleeing to Highcrown, the character was employed by the emperor as a personal mystic. This Background offers spiritually-focused dialogue options, ideal for players wanting a magical, wizard-like roleplay experience, and particularly resonates with the companion Giatta.

• Noble Scion: This Background depicts a character born into noble privilege but marred by family scandal and moral failings. Seeking imperial favor, the Noble Scion becomes a valuable asset to the emperor. This option suits players who wish to remain loyal to the empire and serve its interests.

• Vanguard Scout: This Background portrays a character spared execution by the empire, preferring wilderness life to city politics. Their tracking and espionage skills make them a valuable asset.
