The Asus ROG Ally Z1 Extreme is a Windows 11 gaming handheld PC, representing the premium model in Asus' lineup. It features an AMD Zen 4 based Z1 Extreme processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD. The device sports a vibrant 7-inch 1080p display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Unlike its main competitor, the Steam Deck (which uses a Linux-based Steam OS), the ROG Ally operates on Windows 11. While Steam OS offers more streamlined usability, Windows 11 provides greater customization options and easier access to game platforms beyond Steam.
In our Asus ROG Ally review, Robert Anderson noted: "The ROG Ally delivers on the promise of a portable Xbox Game Pass machine that fans have wanted. Despite some drawbacks like a sometimes-frustrating user interface, limited battery life, and missing Steam Deck-style touchpads, there's no denying the enjoyment this handheld delivers. Its brilliant 1080p screen performs exceptionally well in any lighting condition, and when paired with impressive hardware specs at this competitive price point, it emerges as a legitimate Steam Deck alternative."
More advanced alternatives require significant additional investment
While newer gaming handhelds have surpassed the ROG Ally in some aspects, they come with substantially higher price tags. Asus' own ROG Ally X upgrades the experience with a larger battery, increased RAM and storage, and an additional USB Type-C port - but costs $800 ($300 premium over the ROG Ally).
The Lenovo Legion Go S Steam Edition (2025 release) represents another premium option with double the RAM and storage of the ROG Ally, plus a larger 9-inch display. As the first non-Valve Steam OS handheld, it outclasses the current Steam Deck model, though at $830 it's $330 more than this ROG Ally deal.
