If you're considering joining the AMD ecosystem for your next PC upgrade, the timing couldn't be better. In early March, AMD launched its flagship model in the latest Zen 5 "X3D" series: the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D. While this processor has been largely unavailable at most retailers since its release, Amazon has just restocked it today at the standard price, though availability may be limited. This chip currently stands as the top gaming processor from both Intel and AMD, while also offering a more compelling option for content creators compared to the previous leader, the 9800X3D.

Creative professionals seeking the best gaming processor available need look no further—this is the ultimate CPU. The new 9950X3D features a maximum boost clock of 5.7GHz with 16 cores, 32 threads, and 144MB of combined L2 and L3 cache. For gaming, it offers a slight performance advantage over the 9800X3D. However, in productivity applications, it significantly outpaces both other Zen 5 X3D processors and any competing Intel offerings.

"While the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D may be the most powerful gaming processor available today, that doesn't automatically make it the best choice for every user. Most people will find the Ryzen 7 9800X3D perfectly adequate, especially considering its much more accessible $479 price point. The 9950X3D truly shines for gamers who regularly use creative applications like Photoshop and Premiere, where it delivers approximately 15% better performance than the 9800X3D."

AMD's X3D series processors are optimized for gaming through the company's 3D V-Cache technology. Since all three CPUs in this series feature 3D V-Cache on a single CCD, they deliver comparable gaming performance. The minor variations stem primarily from clock speed differences. The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D reaches a maximum boost clock of 5.2GHz with 8 cores, 16 threads, and 104MB of combined L2 and L3 cache. While competent for multitasking, rendering, and creative work, the core count makes it less ideal for these demanding tasks. For pure gaming performance at this price, however, it's an exceptional processor.
AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D Review by Jacqueline Thomas
"The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D delivers outstanding gaming performance, making it easier to recommend over recent processors like the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K or Ryzen 9 9900X. Particularly when building a system with a powerful graphics card, the 9800X3D ensures you maximize the potential of whatever GPU you choose to pair with it."
