Peter David, the acclaimed novelist and legendary comic book writer known for his transformative work on The Incredible Hulk, Young Justice, and X-Factor, has passed away at the age of 68. The news was confirmed by his friend and fellow writer Keith R.A. DeCandido on Facebook.
Over a career spanning decades, David left an indelible mark on both Marvel and DC Comics. He is perhaps best known for his monumental 12-year tenure on Marvel’s The Incredible Hulk, a run that redefined the complex dynamic between Bruce Banner and the Hulk. His storytelling, often layered with psychological depth and emotional nuance, earned him widespread acclaim. Alongside artist Dale Keown, David received the prestigious Eisner Award in 1992. Just as Frank Miller is synonymous with Daredevil and Chris Claremont with the X-Men, Peter David is universally recognized as the most influential and defining writer in Hulk history.

David also co-created Spider-Man 2099, a futuristic reimagining of the web-slinger that remains a fan favorite. His contributions to X-Factor were equally groundbreaking. During his first run, he transformed the team from a reunion of the original X-Men into a government-operated mutant task force. His later, critically acclaimed series reinvented the team once more—as a mutant detective agency led by Jamie Madrox, the Multiple Man—earning praise for its innovative storytelling and character development.
At DC Comics, David brought his signature depth to titles such as Aquaman, where he modernized the character for a new generation, Supergirl, and Young Justice, which became a cornerstone of DC’s younger superhero lineup. He was also a prolific contributor to the Star Trek universe, writing both novels and comics. His 1994 novel Q-Squared remains a standout in Star Trek literary canon, celebrated for its bold narrative and multiverse exploration.
Beyond comics and prose, David made significant contributions to television and video games. He wrote for series including Babylon 5, Young Justice, and Ben 10: Alien Force, showcasing his versatility across media. His video game writing credits include Shadow Complex and Spider-Man: Edge of Time, further demonstrating his ability to craft compelling stories in interactive formats.
