Riot Games' highly anticipated 2XKO (formerly Project L) is set to revolutionize the tag-team fighting game genre. This innovative title introduces a unique twist on 2v2 combat, offering a fresh and engaging experience.
A Novel Approach to Tag-Team Battles
2XKO, showcased at EVO 2024, departs from traditional tag-team mechanics. Instead of a single player controlling both characters, Duo Play allows two players to team up, each controlling a champion. This results in thrilling four-player matches, with each team comprising a Point character and an Assist character. Even 2v1 matchups are possible, adding another layer of strategic depth.
The game features a dynamic tag system with three core mechanics:
- Assist Actions: The Point character can call upon the Assist for special moves.
- Handshake Tag: The Point and Assist characters seamlessly swap roles.
- Dynamic Save: The Assist can intervene to break up enemy combos.
Unlike many tag fighters where a single knockout ends the match, 2XKO requires both players on a team to be defeated. Defeated characters, however, remain active as Assists, providing crucial support.
Strategic Synergies with the Fuse System
Beyond character selection, 2XKO introduces "Fuses"—synergy options that dramatically alter team playstyles. The playable demo featured five Fuses:
- PULSE: Rapid button presses unleash devastating combos.
- FURY: Below 40% health, bonus damage and special dash cancel are activated.
- FREESTYLE: Allows for two Handshake Tags in quick succession.
- DOUBLE DOWN: Combine ultimate abilities with your partner's.
- 2X ASSIST: Empower your partner with multiple assist actions.
The Fuse system, according to developer Daniel Maniago, is designed to maximize player expression and facilitate powerful, synchronized combos.
A Diverse Roster and Upcoming Content
The playable demo showcased six characters from the League of Legends universe: Braum, Ahri, Darius, Ekko, Yasuo, and Illaoi, each with unique movesets. While popular characters like Jinx and Katarina were absent from the Alpha Lab Playtest, their inclusion in future updates has been confirmed.
