'God of War' Show Shakeup: Creative Team Overhauled

The Show is Not Cancelled

Recent reports confirm that showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus have left the God of War TV series adaptation. Despite having already completed multiple scripts, Sony and Amazon have opted for a different creative vision.

Key figures remaining on board include Santa Monica Studio's Creative Director Cory Barlog (executive producer), PlayStation Productions' Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, Vertigo's Roy Lee, and Santa Monica Studio's Yumi Yang. Amazon and Sony will now search for a new showrunner, producers, and writers to redefine the series' direction. Importantly, the project remains uncancelled.

Despite Setbacks, the Future Remains Bright

Initially announced on a PlayStation podcast in 2022, the Amazon and Sony collaboration for the God of War TV adaptation followed the immense success of the 2018 game reboot. This project is part of Sony's broader strategy to adapt its popular video game franchises into film and television, a strategy that led to the formation of PlayStation Productions in 2019. This initiative also includes a Netflix adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn, among other projects.

Sony has already released several successful adaptations, including Uncharted (2022), The Last of Us (2023 – with a second season slated for 2025), Gran Turismo (2023), and Twisted Metal (2024). Furthermore, several other projects are in development, such as Gravity Rush, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and the Until Dawn film (scheduled for release on April 25, 2025).
