During the Nintendo Direct for Switch 2 on April 2, it was confirmed that The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker from the GameCube will make its way to the Switch 2. This news sparked discussions on whether Wind Waker HD, originally released for the Wii U, would also be ported to the next-generation console.

Nintendo of America Senior Vice President of Product Development Nate Bihldorff addressed this during a conversation at a Switch 2 press event in New York. As reported by Kinda Funny Games Daily on April 9, host Tim Gettys shared that Bihldorff was quick to reassure fans, stating, "no, all options are on the table" regarding the possibility of porting Wind Waker HD to the Switch 2. While nothing is set in stone, this statement keeps hope alive for fans eager to experience the HD version on the new console.

First Released in 2002

Originally launched in 2002 in Japan and 2003 in the West, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker quickly became a fan favorite on the GameCube. A decade later, in 2013, Wind Waker HD was released for the Wii U, bringing significant enhancements to the game. These improvements included a jump from 480p to high-definition visuals, better lighting, gyro controls for weapons, faster sailing, and various gameplay tweaks. With the GameCube library now exclusive to the Switch 2, a port of Wind Waker HD could be the only way for owners of the original Switch to enjoy this enhanced experience.

In addition to these developments, Nintendo has announced that the Nintendo Switch Online classics game libraries will be rebranded as "Nintendo Classics." Subscribers to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack will have the opportunity to play The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-ZERO GX, and SOULCALIBUR II on the Switch 2, with more titles to follow. These classics will come with in-game options such as a retro screen filter and widescreen gameplay, enhancing the nostalgic experience for players.
