Application Description

Phỏm (also known as Tá lả or Tú lơ khơ) is a popular Vietnamese card game, especially in the North. The names "Phỏm" and "Tá lả" reflect regional variations. Phỏm gameplay centers around forming sets (Phỏm) of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, or three of a kind, while minimizing the points of remaining unmatched cards (Junk cards). The traditional 52-card deck and varied strategies make it a captivating game, perfect for family gatherings and holidays.

Key Terminology:

• Phỏm: A set of three or more cards of the same suit and consecutive rank, or three or more cards of the same rank.
• Junk cards: Cards not part of any Phỏm.
• Ù: A player with three Phỏm (no Junk cards) – the immediate winner.
• Stomach (Cọc): The remaining undealt cards.
• Móm: When a player cannot form any Phỏm at the end of the game.
• Take the pin (Ăn cọc): Taking an opponent's discarded card in the final round.
• Send (Chốt): Discarding a card in the final round that completes an opponent's Phỏm.
• Compensation (Bù): A player who takes a pin and is then beaten by another player who goes Ù. The pin-taker compensates the Ù player. Three consecutive cards also trigger compensation.
• Re (Bồi): A player gets an extra turn if someone plays after their discard.

Gameplay:

• Players: 2-4 players. The dealer (or previous round winner) gets 10 cards; others get 9. Remaining cards form the Stomach.
• Turns: Counter-clockwise, starting with the player holding 10 cards.
• Playing: The first player discards a card. The next player can either take the card to form a Phỏm or draw from the Stomach. This continues until a player goes Ù or the round ends.
• Game End: The game ends when a player goes Ù, or after four rounds if no one goes Ù. In this case, points are calculated based on Junk cards.
• Final Round: Players must complete their Phỏm, send cards if possible, and then discard their last card. Remaining Junk cards determine the score.
• Scoring: A, J, Q, K are worth 1, 11, 12, 13 respectively. Other cards are face value. Lowest score wins. Specific point adjustments are applied for rankings (1st: +6, 2nd: -1, 3rd: -2, 4th: -3), taking/being taken for the pin (+/-4), and going Ù (+15, others -5). Players who are "burned" (Móm) lose 4 points to the winner.
